What makes a winning nature or bird photograph for you?

A winning image for me is one that has this WOW factor. It can be a behaviour shot with a lot of action and drama or a static portrait with unique light and mood. Composition and technique are crucial elements as well.

What key advice can you offer to entrants?

My tips for entrants would be – make sure your technique is excellent, as this is the basics. Perfect sharpness and exposure are essential. Process and compose your image in a way that maximises the image potential, but make sure not to overdo it.

Favourite Image - Mating Nankeen Kestrels

The mating Nankeen Kestrels image is one of my favourite images. I was busy photographing the female when all of a sudden, to my big surprise, the male landed on her back. I will never forget the excitement and thrill when I saw the images on my camera’s LCD.
